Liverpool ‘Monitoring’ Everton Star Branthwaite for Van

Liverpool 'Monitoring' Everton Star Branthwaite for Van

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite as a potential long-term successor to captain Virgil van Dijk, whose contract situation and age are causing concern at Anfield. However, Everton’s position remains firm: the England international is not for sale.

Liverpool Eye Branthwaite Amidst Defensive Rethink

Reports suggest that Liverpool are considering a move for Branthwaite as they prepare for the eventual departure of Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender, currently 35, will be turning 36 when his contract expires at the end of next season. Former Manchester United and Tottenham scout Mick Brown indicated to Football Insider that Liverpool “will be ready” to let Van Dijk move on, necessitating a search for his replacement.

Brown highlighted “major concerns at centre-half” and across the backline for Liverpool, with the club specifically seeking left-sided centre-backs. Branthwaite is said to be “very high” on their list and “ticks a lot of boxes” after being closely watched by scouts. Liverpool are currently conducting due diligence on the player, assessing his character and background, according to Brown.

The prospect of a cross-city transfer between arch-rivals Liverpool and Everton is reportedly a significant hurdle, with such a direct deal not having occurred since 2002. Brown added that if Liverpool receive “any hint” Branthwaite might be available, they would likely make a move.

Everton’s Unwavering Stance on Defender

Despite Liverpool’s reported interest, Everton have made their plans clear: they have no intention of selling Jarrad Branthwaite. Speculation around the defender has intensified following his strong start to the season and an England recall, as reported by Read Everton.

According to TEAMtalk, Branthwaite is a “crucial part of David Moyes’ plans” and is “not for sale,” with Everton not considering his departure in 2027. This position is strengthened by a long-term contract Branthwaite signed last year, which commits him to the club until 2030, removing any immediate pressure to sell. Reports suggest that Moyes made keeping Branthwaite a priority after returning to the club in January 2025.

It is understood that only a “record-breaking offer” might prompt Everton to reconsider their stance, but even then, selling a key player to Liverpool would introduce an “obvious additional complication.” For now, Liverpool’s interest is believed to be at the monitoring and due-diligence stage, without any official approach or offer being made.

Furthermore, Branthwaite himself is reportedly open to discussing a new contract with Everton, despite his current long-term deal.

What This Means for UK Football Fans

This dynamic illustrates the strategic long-term planning required at the top levels of English football, providing a constant stream of transfer speculation and high-stakes negotiation that engages fans across the UK.
