Jaguar Type 01 Electric GT Unveiled: Price and Performance

Jaguar is set to unveil its new production Type 01 electric grand tourer in New York tonight, marking a pivotal moment for the iconic British marque. The vehicle, which is the first of Jaguar’s new electric-only and more expensive future line-up, is expected to start at around £120,000, with many models likely to sell closer to £140,000 once options are added, according to Regit.

Managing director Rawdon Glover described the launch as one of the biggest moments in the company’s history. Orders for the Type 01 are anticipated to open before the end of the year, with the first customer cars slated for delivery in summer 2027.

A New Direction for Jaguar

The unveiling of the Type 01 comes almost two years after Jaguar’s bold “Copy Nothing” campaign, which aimed to redefine the brand. Jaguar has not sold a new car in the UK since sales halted in November 2024, making this reveal critical to justifying the company’s reinvention. The strategy involves deliberately moving into a market segment positioned between high-end Porsche and Mercedes models and ultra-luxury brands like Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

The “Copy Nothing” campaign, launched in November 2024 with a new logo and typography but no cars, drew fierce reactions, including comments from Elon Musk, Nigel Farage, and Donald Trump. Glover has consistently defended the strategy, arguing that playing it safe would have led to Jaguar being overshadowed, and acknowledging that only a small portion of existing customers were expected to follow the brand upmarket. This makes the Type 01 more than just a new model; it’s the first tangible product by which the new Jaguar will be judged, as reported by Regit.

Performance and Design Highlights

The Jaguar Type 01 is designed to be a high-performance electric GT, boasting more than 1,000bhp and approximately 1,300Nm of torque from its three electric motors – one at the front and two at the rear. These run on a new 850-volt platform. Jaguar also claims an advanced torque vectoring system that checks grip and wheel slip up to 1,000 times per second, aiming for clean power delivery from the powerful vehicle.

For long-distance touring, the car features a 120kWh battery, targeting an impressive 478 miles on the WLTP test cycle used in the UK. Rapid 350kW charging is projected to add 200 miles of range in under 15 minutes, promising comfortable continental trips, though official figures are pending until closer to launch, according to Regit. The vehicle is a 5.2-metre four-door GT with a low 1.4-metre roofline and large 23-inch wheels, closely following the Type 00 concept shown in 2024.

Inside, the Type 01 features a central spine dividing the cabin into four individual seats, a wide display across the dashboard, and a smaller screen for climate and heated seats. It foregoes a conventional rear window in favour of Jaguar’s Digital ClearSight system, which feeds a roof-mounted camera image to a screen at the base of the windscreen. Jaguar states the car incorporates 360 patented features in total.

Implications for the West Midlands

As a key player in the UK’s automotive landscape, particularly within the West Midlands, Jaguar’s reinvention with the Type 01 holds significant regional importance. The success of this radical new electric vehicle is crucial for the company’s future and, by extension, for the advanced manufacturing sector in the region. The move towards a luxury electric-only portfolio represents a bold gamble that could solidify Jaguar’s place in the premium market and secure jobs and innovation in its traditional home.
