A.J. Brown Ankle Injury Mars Patriots Debut

New England Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown suffered a right ankle injury during his debut game with the team against the Seattle Seahawks and was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the Week 1 fixture. The incident, which occurred early in the third quarter, marks a significant concern for the Patriots and their recent high-profile acquisition.

Brown’s Debut Cut Short by Injury

Brown, who had joined the Patriots from the Philadelphia Eagles in a blockbuster offseason trade, immediately grabbed his right ankle after going down on the field. He was attended to by New England’s medical staff before heading off the field and did not return for the team’s subsequent offensive possessions.

While NBC Sports sideline reporter Melissa Stark initially revealed that the receiver was considered questionable to return, according to MARCA, X-rays on his injured ankle led to him being officially ruled out for the rest of the game. Yahoo Sports UK also confirmed that Brown would not return to the season opener, highlighting that while the severity of the injury is yet to be determined, his inability to return is “cause for concern.”

Before his exit, Brown, who was making his debut for the Patriots, recorded three receptions for 26 yards. This game was part of the wider NFL 2026 Schedule.

Implications for the Patriots and Game Dynamics

The Patriots had acquired Brown by sending future draft capital to Philadelphia, including a 2028 first-round pick, with the hope that he would become the team’s next elite receiving threat following the departure of Stefon Diggs, as reported by MARCA. His injury now represents the first major concern of the season for a Patriots team that entered the match-up at Lumen Field relatively healthy under head coach Mike Vrabel.

The game itself, a Super Bowl rematch against the Seattle Seahawks, also saw a major injury on the opposing side. Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold left the field due to a hip injury, sustained during a Patriots’ sack. Backup quarterback Drew Lock subsequently took over the offense for Seattle.

New England’s offence also struggled to find consistency throughout the match, managing just 154 total yards through three quarters. Quarterback Drake Maye entered the fourth quarter with only 84 passing yards. The Patriots relied heavily on a physical defense and their running game to counter Seattle.
